Scottish Cup Round Two - Preview - Part Two

Next up is Dumbarton vs. Berwick Rangers. Like the Brechin-Stirling tie, one wonders how demoralising it must be to face division two opposition yet again this season. However, this match seems to be more significant than most. Dumbarton just "lost" their manager, Brian Fairley, who took the reins at Forfar, whilst Berwick are just beginning to find their league form. This is one game I wouldn't lay a bet on.

In another intra-division clash, Gretna take on Elgin City. Gretna's wealthy backer Brooks Mileson (pictured below) will hope to see his all-star team overcome Elgin City... JUST LIKE THEY DID LAST WEEK.

That's right - in a triumph of tradition over planning, the 500 mile round-trip will be reciprocated by the Highlanders this week, following Gretna's triumphant journey to Borough Briggs last week.

Huntly may prove today's surprise package as they welcome East Fife to Christie Park. The Highland League side overcame Peterhead in Round One; with luck and hard work on their side, there is no reason why they can't overcome a weaker opponent like the Fifers. However, a rare away win over Queen's Park will have buoyed the spirits down Methil way, giving the L.A. Lakers of East Fife ample motivation to play some silky one-touch football to shock the Highland minnows (or, failing that, bundle it up the pitch to a seven-foot tall target man and hope for the best.)

Keith vs. Montrose is not exactly a tie to make the heart skip a beat, but with a potentially lucrative third round tie at stake, neither team will be taking this game lightly. Montrose, following some frankly awful recent league placings, have surprised Division 3 onlookers by rising to 3rd place this season. Granted, they're still around 12,000 points behind Peterhead and Gretna, but of the chasing pack, they seem to be the most consistent. Having the game at Kynoch Park will no doubt boost the Highland League high(land)-flyers, so a close game is surely on the cards.

Finally, Second Division leaders Stranraer welcome Queen's Park to their long-forgotten outpost of humanity (well, forgotten to everyone except those boarding the ferry for Belfast.) With Stranraer's frighteningly good home form showing no signs of letting up, and Davie Graham still worrying defences everywhere, a home win seems the most likely outcome. That said, blah blah romance of the cup yadda yadda no easy games anymore jabber jabber shock win bleat bleat gentleman amateurs. Fill in the blanks yourself, I'm off out.
