Craig Coyle Released

Morton's fans' player of the year in 2002, Craig Coyle, has been released from Greenock Morton FC.

The young Edinburgh-based shot stopper was instrumental in achieving promotion in 2003, producing a dazzling array of acrobatic saves to keep Morton in the title hunt. However, there were weaknesses to his game; commanding his area, particularly during aerial threats from high balls, was a constant source of difficulty for Craig. However, such was his agility and dexterity on the ground, when he was called upon to save in a one-on-one situation, most 'Ton fans began to expect, rather than hope, to see the ball kept over the line.

But it was a recent injury and illness that eventually ended his spell as the Morton number 1. David McGurn, who ironically was released last summer before being quickly re-signed due to no other 'keepers joining the club, deputised for Coyle, and during this time made the main goalie role his own. McGurn has now played 1 more league game than Coyle during this campaign, being highly acclaimed in several of these, including the last game against Stirling Albion in which he received the sponsors' man of the match award. With a lack of first team action for Coyle, a frustration perhaps amplified by his daily commute from Edinburgh to the 'Ton base at Bridge of Weir, the die seemed cast. Craig duly left the club this morning.

We at Morton-Mad (that is to say, I at Morton-Mad, since I'm the only one here) wish Craig the best of luck in his future endeavours, both on and off the pitch. (I say off the pitch because Coyle co-owns a hairdressing business with his wife in Edinburgh.)
