Although Alex Williams has now been released, the manager believes the young striker 'paid his way'. Said 'Scotty', 'I'm sorry it didn't work out for Alex yet I've no regrets at bringing him here on loan. In his first outing he came on as a sub against Raith Rovers at Kirkcaldy and laid on a last-minute winner for Derek Lyle. We'd just lost four games on the trot so that win was so important and got us back on track again'.
Well, there you go, then.
Williams joined Morton from Stirling Albion in 2002 for a Division Three record fee of £50,000. Following a season and a half of magnificent goalscoring exploits, Alex's form trailed off significantly, as off-field matters complicated his short career. After a small revival at the start of this season, Ian Scott of Queens showed an interest in acquiring Williams. While a transfer fee was not agreed, a loan deal was settled on as a compromise. Sadly, it didn't seem to materialise into a permanent move for Williams.
With Templeman, McLaren and Jason Walker all ahead of Williams in the pecking order at Cappielow, it seems unlikely that the enigmatic youngster will feature this season. But with a year still to run on his contract, will another club come in for him?
